I do a search on Google with two words: Saturn and Reverse. So, all these Saturns have the same problem. I would also NOT pay for a "flush" either as they are really unnecessary if the fluid has been changed at the 30K mile intervals per the maintenance schedule. That pan does NOT need to come off to do the shaft nut. If it ain't leaking say politely NO thank-you. The dealer probably wants to replace the upper pan gasket. Also valve body replacement can also be done LATER if it indeed becomes an issue as it is an unrelated repair as far as what comes apart for the input shaft nut retorque. Odds are good that the valve body does NOT need to be replaced. IF it is also an issue with the FORWARD gears as well, it is almost always the input shaft nut on transaxles with less than 150K miles on them. If reverse is the ONLY problem child at this point, the "cure" maybe a little proceedure I have posted in the "How-To" section, provided it has not been doing more than a few months at worst. It actually more about putting the car into reverse while it's still moving forward, or into drive while it's still moving backwards that "may" be a contributing factor to the input shaft nut loosening up. they can't admit that they didn't do a good job engineering that part of the car and it drives me mad! So is that true!? i wonder why saturn is blaming drivers for this. He said that the reverse problem will return in 3 month to a year without a new valve body. He said i will not guarantee this job because you didnt do all the recomended repairs. i ended up telling him to retorque the nut without doing anything else cost $340.75. I asked him how does a 50 thou mile car has all these problems and it's as i saw on the net is fairly common problem, he said DRIVERS hit the gas once they put the car in reverse and dont let the car have it's 2 secs delay to go into reverse. when i told him it's the nut that caused this he said yes but the bad valve body is what drives it out of place. He also wants to change some gasket and do a flush. the break down was a new valve body and the shaft nut.

He told me my reverse problem had several causes! He said i need to spend $950 to fix it. I just got off the phone with the saturn dealer in jersey city.
